Hotel History

There has been a hostelry here on the site since Roman times. As a tidal ford, travellers would arrive and wait to cross the river and the hostelry became known as the ‘passage way’ across the river now the Passage House. Built next to this 17th century Inn on the banks of the Teign estuary, our Devon hotel offers a modern, comfortable atmosphere whether your stay is for business or pleasure. Perfect for short breaks Devon has lots to offer from the untamed wilderness of Dartmoor to quaint thatched villages and stunning coastal scenery.

Dartmoor Railway

In later years a granite railway was built to link the quarries on Dartmoor with the Stover Canal shipping granite, which was used on many of London’s famous buildings. Also china clay was mined locally and shipped out via the Hackney Canal. The river was a hive of activity with the Lightermen and Barge’s working the estuary and canals. The ruins of their cottages are still to be seen on the banks of the river along from the Inn.
